Which camcorders send DV over USB?
Updated 18 Oct 2026
Most MiniDV camcorders with a USB port can only copy still photos or act as a low-resolution webcam. Full-quality tape capture needs the FireWire (i.LINK / DV) port.
A few DV models released after USB 2.0 arrived can stream the full DV signal over USB. Windows 10 and 11 still include a driver for them. No HDV camcorder is known to send HDV over USB.
Below, 'manufacturer' means the maker's own spec page lists PC video transfer over USB. 'Tested' and 'reported' come from DVMP, a UK DV capture software developer.

How to use DV over USB
Set the camcorder's USB mode in its menu. On Panasonic it is 'USB FUNCTION > Motion DV'. Then connect it to a Windows 10 or 11 PC. It appears as 'Video Edit' and can be captured by DV-aware tools such as DVMP Pro. Some general video apps won't detect a DV stream arriving over USB.
DV over USB only goes from the camera to the PC. Every camcorder in the first table also has a FireWire DV port, which remains the most widely supported route. See our Windows 11 and Mac guides for step-by-step capture.
Three ways to digitise your MiniDV tapes
1. DIY with your own kit. If you already have a camcorder, cables and tapes, the GearMath MiniDV Extraction Tool (coming soon) does the work: plug in, it detects the camera, you press capture, and it splits the tape into clips by recording time. The download is free. You pay per tape to unlock an HD upscale and shot split. Join the waitlist at gearmath.com/minidv.
2. Rent the kit, then use the tool. If you don't have a working camcorder, renting one is a great option. Hire a MiniDV camera or deck with all its cables for a day or a week from one of the rental houses below, capture with the GearMath tool, and send it back.
3. Done for you. Send your tapes to Yellow Cactus, the MiniDV partner of GearMath, and they handle everything. It costs more than doing it yourself. Ask Yellow Cactus for a quote at weareyellowcactus.com.

Only models with a manufacturer statement or a named tester are listed as DV over USB. If your manual says 'DV streaming' or 'Motion DV' over USB, your camcorder probably supports it.
